Potgieter Petrus Paulus "Bokkie"

Age 73. He was a private man who lived alone on the property, where he grew vegetables and bred chickens on a piece of land allocated to him via a local trust. Bokkie Potgieter was outside his home building a chicken kraal when a lone intruder entered the property. The intruder, who was a local man in his thirties known to the community as a frequent housebreaker and troublemaker, ambushed Potgieter to steal his utility vehicle, a Ford Bantam bakkie. A violent struggle ensued, during which the attacker repeatedly struck Potgieter on the head and face with a panga. He was left unrecognisable from the severity of the blows. The medical cause of death was determined to be multiple severe panga hacks to the face and head.Following the assault, the attacker dragged Potgieter's body and loaded him into the Ford Bantam bakkie. The attacker attempted to flee the scene in the stolen vehicle but was unable to control it, driving into a donga and crashing the bakkie into an electricity pole about 500 to 800 meters down the farm road. The commotion and the crash drew the immediate attention of local farmworkers and community residents. When the community members approached the halted vehicle, they discovered Potgieter's feet hanging out of the window and realized he had been attacked. Potgieter was still alive but bleeding profusely when community members reached him, passing away shortly thereafter before medical assistance could arrive.
