Swanepoel Daniel Casparus "Danie"

4 November 2017 · Eensgevonden Smallholdings, Vryheid · KwaZulu-Natal · Stabbed
Age 57. Danie Swanepoel was ambushed at his home by two young men whom he reportedly knew. The attackers forced entry into the residence, overpowered him, and subjected him to a prolonged and inhumane ordeal. During the attack, they bound him and ruthlessly tortured him. He was repeatedly stabbed with a knife in both of his sides and was ultimately stabbed to death. The perpetrators thoroughly ransacked the home and fled the property after committing a robbery and kidnapping. The incident occurred barely a week after the nationwide "Black Monday" demonstrations against rural violence.Law enforcement officials acted immediately following the discovery of the crime. Investigating Officer Lieutenant Colonel Du Plessis led a continuous, round-the-clock operation that quickly tracked down the perpetrators. Within days of the murder, police arrested two primary suspects. They were identified as 21-year-old Ayanda Mncube and 23-year-old Sibusiso Mbatha. The legal proceedings moved with notable speed due to the overwhelming forensic and physical evidence compiled by the police. Rather than stretching into a multi-year trial, both of the accused chose to confess to their actions. On November 16, 2017, less than two weeks after the murder took place, Ayanda Mncube and Sibusiso Mbatha appeared before the Pietermaritzburg High Court where they officially entered a plea of guilty. The High Court successfully convicted both men of murder, kidnapping, and robbery with aggravating circumstances
