Scott Peter Campbell

8 September 2018 · Farm Lynn Avis, Creighton · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
Age 66. Mr. Scott and his wife, Joyce, were inside their farmhouse when three armed intruders ambushed them. The attackers bound the couple, ransacked the residence, and fatally shot Mr. Scott in the chest during the robbery. In later court testimonies, it was revealed that when his wife asked the attackers why they had shot her husband, one of the men told her she "talked too much" and threatened to kill her as well. The attackers fled the property with items of relatively low monetary value, including mobile phones and electronic equipment. Four days after the murder, police apprehended the first suspect at his residence. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and cellphones stolen from the Scott household. His arrest quickly led to the capture of his accomplices. Three men—Bhekizizwe Mchunu, Bethwell Sifiso Mthembu, and Sipho Mbotho—were officially charged with murder, housebreaking with intent to rob, and robbery with aggravating circumstances. The high-profile trial took place in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. A confession by Mchunu proved to be pivotal evidence. The attackers were found guilty on all counts and handed heavy sentences, including life imprisonment for the murder.
