✝
Geldenhuys Jurie Johannes (Dr)
27 October 2000 · Farm Rietfontein, Hartbeesfontein · North West · Shot
The incident began during the early morning hours when Dr. Geldenhuys was working at his farmstead office. A group of five men arrived on the property under the guise of wanting to speak with him directly about a business or administrative matter. Some initial monitoring accounts indicated that individuals in the group falsely claimed to be representatives from political headquarters to gain his trust and defuse any suspicion. Dr. Geldenhuys walked to the entrance of his office to engage with the visitors.
Without warning, the confrontation turned violent when one of the men pulled out a firearm. Dr. Jurie Johannes Geldenhuys was shot execution-style in the throat from a very short distance right at his office doorway. The cold-blooded nature of the killing caused immediate panic, and the attackers fled the scene shortly after the fatal shot was fired.
The murder sent shockwaves through the regional agricultural community, prompting the North West Agricultural Union, led by its president Wilco Beukes, to issue a severe public statement. The union holding the state responsible for the lack of security in rural sectors temporarily suspended its cooperation with several state departments to protest the ongoing violence against farmers. Dr. Geldenhuys's legacy as an exceptional cattle breeder continued through his stud bloodlines, which fellow farmers later credited with advancing regional livestock genetics.
