Erasmus Piet A
30 July 1998 · Farm Geluksrus, Middelrus, Mooi River · KwaZulu-Natal · Shot
The primary victims associated with the property were Christoffel Buys and his wife, Dina Buys, who was 65 years old at the time of the incident. On the night of the attack, their friends, Piet Erasmus and his wife Anna Elizabeth Erasmus, arrived at the homestead with the intention of spending the night with the couple.During the targeted farm invasion, the attackers breached the residence and opened fire on the occupants. Piet Erasmus, aged 46, was shot and killed instantly inside the house. Dina Buys sustained severe gunshot wounds during the assault and died while she was being rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment. Christoffel Buys survived the immediate onslaught but succumbed to his injuries and passed away a few weeks later on August 25, 1998. Anna Elizabeth Erasmus survived the attack to later provide firsthand eyewitness testimony in court regarding the events.Following an intensive investigation by the Greytown Murder and Robbery Unit, police forces successfully tracked down and arrested two suspects in August 1999. The perpetrators were identified as Xolani Mkhize, who was 22 years old at the time of the trial, and Mchazaleni Mkhize, who was 25 years old. Both individuals were residents of the nearby Weenen area. The criminal trial took place in May 2001 before Justice van der Reyden and two judicial assessors. The state prosecution successfully led critical forensic and DNA evidence that matched the biological profile of the blood recovered from the crime scene directly to the suspects. Although both defendants initially entered pleas of not guilty to the charges, the specialized evidence confirmed their presence at the homestead during the ambush. They faced formal convictions for multiple counts of murder, attempted murder, housebreaking, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
