Engelbrecht Eduard Jacobus

Age 34. On the evening of Monday, 11 September 2000, Engelbrecht, his wife Nadeen, and their 10-year-old son were watching television in their lounge. His son left the room to fetch a blanket from the bedroom but was intercepted by four armed intruders who had breached the home security. The men forced the young boy back into the lounge, with one assailant wrapping an arm around his neck and holding a knife to his throat. Seeing his son held hostage, Engelbrecht immediately rushed forward to protect his child. He lunged at one of the intruders who was armed with a crowbar. Two of the other attackers, who were armed with handguns, opened fire as the struggle moved into the hallway. Engelbrecht was shot multiple times during the physical altercation. The attackers then dragged him back into the lounge, where his wife witnessed them shoot him twice more while he lay defenseless, executing him on the scene.The South African Police Service conducted a thorough forensic investigation of the smallholding, which led to a breakthrough when clear fingerprints left by the perpetrators were matched. During the subsequent criminal trial at the Pretoria High Court in October 2003, the state presented this conclusive fingerprint evidence alongside the visual eyewitness testimony of his widow, Nadeen Engelbrecht. The trial resulted in the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of the attackers for murder, armed robbery with aggravating circumstances, and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. High Court details confirm the killers were sentenced to long-term or life imprisonment terms.
