Tilla van Zyl was shot once in the groin, and the attackers subsequently threw her to the ground, causing her to hit her head severely; a forensic post-mortem determined her medical cause of death to be hemorrhaging and bleeding on the brain. A security guard noticed an open back door the following morning, on Sunday, August 20, 2017, and raised the alarm, leading a farmworker to alert the couple's son, Jurgens, who discovered their bodies inside the house at approximately 09:00. South African Police Service and the Heritage Protection Group, which led to the initial tracking and arrest of eight suspects in early September 2017. While charges were later withdrawn against some individuals due to a lack of connecting evidence, the primary perpetrator was successfully prosecuted in the Limpopo Division of the High Court in Polokwane. On Tuesday, August 24, 2021, the court officially convicted a thirty-seven-year-old male named Mpho Penuel Mbuyane on two counts of murder and three counts of house robbery. Judge management handed down a sentence of two life imprisonment terms for the double murders, alongside an additional fifteen years in prison for the house robberies.
