Emslie Werner Dr.
20 September 2017 · Farm Goedehoop, Ellisras · Limpopo · Shot
Age 55. Four armed perpetrators infiltrated the property and executed a targeted ambush while Werner Emslie was sitting outside on the veranda of his home. Two of the attackers were armed with pistols and opened fire at close range, shooting Werner Emslie multiple times until he died on the scene. The attackers then breached the house, seriously wounding his 55-year-old wife, Mariëtte Emslie (who is also a practicing medical doctor), by shooting her in the stomach and inflicting multiple knife wounds. The couple's 19-year-old student daughter, Barbara Emslie, who was inside the living room during the attack, was assaulted and sustained physical injuries before managed to alert neighbors via text message. The perpetrators ransacked the property, stole two handguns from the family safe, and fled the scene using the family’s white Toyota double-cab bakkie. Responding neighbors and police later discovered the stolen vehicle abandoned a few kilometers down the road.Limpopo law enforcement launched an intensive investigation that led to the arrest of 27-year-old Zimbabwean national Petrus Standford Moyo (also referenced as Petros Dambiso Moyo) on October 18, 2017, in Frankfort within the Free State province. While awaiting trial, Moyo executed multiple high-profile escapes from custody, cutting his way out of the Lephalale police station holding cells in November 2017 and later breaking through the roof of a moving police transport vehicle in August 2018, though specialized task teams recaptured him within days of each escape. The criminal trial was finalized in the Limpopo High Court sitting at Lephalale on February 6, 2019. Acting Judge Jan Scheepers found him guilty on all counts and sentenced Petrus Standford Moyo to life imprisonment for the murder of Werner Emslie, alongside additional consecutive terms of 15 years for attempted murder, 30 years for aggravated robbery, 13 years for housebreaking, 9 years for theft, 3 years for escaping custody, 3 years for malicious damage to property, and 1 year for trespassing. His three remaining accomplices eluded immediate capture.
