Peterson Rudolph Cecil
27 October 2017 · Warmbad · Limpopo · Shot
The story reaches back to September 13, 2017, on the farm TNT in the Verloren area situated between Modimolle (Nylstroom) and Bela-Bela (Warmbad) in the Limpopo province. The property was home to eighty-two-year-old Rudolph Cecil Peterson—known as Cecil—and his seventy-three-year-old wife, Patricia Peterson, who went by the name Pat.
Around nine o’clock on that Wednesday morning, a gang of four armed men wearing balaclavas and gloves ambushed the domestic worker while she was busy with her tasks outside the main residence. Holding her at gunpoint, the attackers aggressively forced her toward the back door of the house while demanding money. When the unsuspecting employers opened the door to see what was happening, the armed group violently rushed into the building and immediately opened fire. Patricia was shot first, sustaining fatal wounds to her stomach, and died at the scene. Despite being shot in the jaw, Cecil showed incredible bravery by dragging his wounded wife into the hallway, locking a security gate to block the attackers, and drawing his own firearm to return fire. Outnumbered, he was severely wounded, and the robbers fled after completely ransacking the home.
Cecil Peterson was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition, where he fought for his life for several weeks. He tragically succumbed to his severe gunshot injuries on October 27, 2017, joining his wife in death and leaving behind their daughters, Sonja Matthee and Tania du Plessis.
Following an intensive investigation by the South African Police Service and the Heritage Protection Group, four suspects—Boitumelo Mathebula, Mpo Nkonyana, Tshepo Tebula, and a fourth accomplice—were tracked down and arrested. Although they maintained their innocence throughout their trial, the weight of the evidence prevailed. In April 2019, the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane found them guilty and sentenced each of them to two consecutive life terms for the double murder, alongside an additional twenty-three years for armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.
