26 October 1995 · Onverwacht Smallholding 22, Pietersburg · Limpopo · Shot
The tragic account of Johannes Nicolaas Botha unfolds in the dark hours of Thursday, October 26, 1995, at Smallholding 22, situated in the Onverwacht area just outside Pietersburg, now known as Polokwane, in the Limpopo province. The fifty-two-year-old resident and his forty-nine-year-old wife, Annetjie Botha, were asleep inside their home when an armed onslaught shattered the nighttime quiet. Criminal intruders targeted the couple's home and positioned themselves directly outside the bedroom window. Without warning, the attackers opened fire, shooting ruthlessly through the glass while the couple lay in their bed. Johannes Nicolaas Botha and his wife Annetjie were both struck by the gunfire, sustaining catastrophic and fatal bullet wounds that claimed their lives instantly.
