Sawyer Thomas "Tom"

Age 63. On the night or early morning of Monday, 3 November 2014, a brutal farm murder claimed the life of sixty-three-year-old Thomas Sawyer, a prominent and highly respected retired criminal defense advocate. Known to colleagues and friends simply as Tom Sawyer, he had spent years operating as a seasoned legal professional in Johannesburg and Pretoria before seeking a quieter life in retirement. He lived alone on his property, Oudehoutdraai, a farm situated in the Val area roughly thirty kilometers outside Greylingstad, near the Villiers gravel road in Mpumalanga. The attack unfolded when intruders breached the homestead's perimeter under the cover of darkness and smashed through the glass of his main bedroom window to gain entry to the house. Once inside, the assailants confronted the retired advocate in his bedroom. The encounter turned exceptionally violent; Tom Sawyer was strangled and suffered a gunshot wound to his chest area during the assault. To hide their deeds, the killers draped his body in curtains and left him on the floor of his bedroom before ransacking the property and fleeing into the rural terrain. The crime was discovered later that Monday morning when his farm laborers arrived for their regular duties at 07:00. The workers grew deeply concerned when the sliding security gate—which Tom Sawyer usually opened for them without fail—remained locked. Looking past the gate toward the homestead about three hundred meters away, they noticed the shattered bedroom window and quickly contacted his neighboring friend and fellow farmer, Wynand Ambrosius. After attempting to call Tom Sawyer's phone without an answer, Ambrosius alerted the Greylingstad Police. The neighbor arrived at the homestead at the same time as the police officers, where they pushed past the broken window and discovered his bloody, lifeless body. The sudden loss sent shockwaves through the quiet farming community, which was unaccustomed to such extreme violence. The Greylingstad Police opened an immediate murder and house robbery investigation, though the attackers initial evasion left the case unresolved in the immediate weeks that followed.
