Van der Westhuizen Willem
31 October 2017 · Farm Bonteheuwel, Griekwastad · Northern Cape · Shot
Age 35. On Tuesday afternoon, October 31, 2017, thirty-five-year-old commercial livestock farmer Willem van der Westhuizen was fatally attacked on his property, Bonteheuwel Farm, situated in the rural district of Griekwastad within the Northern Cape province. The incident occurred between two and three in the afternoon, just one day after the country’s high-profile "Black Monday" protest demonstrations against rural violence. On that day, Willem van der Westhuizen approached one of his farm laborers, thirty-two-year-old Willem Olyn, and instructed him to pack up his things and evacuate the premises. The request sparked a fierce and sudden argument between the two men.
As the confrontation escalated, Willem Olyn produced an unlicensed .22 caliber rifle, which had its serial number filed away, and shot Willem van der Westhuizen, inflicting fatal injuries. The attacker then opened fire on three other farmworkers present at the scene. One of the workers, Dion Barends, sustained a serious gunshot wound that required immediate hospitalization in Kimberley. After threatening the remaining laborers and pointing the firearm at an arriving family, Olyn took Van der Westhuizen's white Ford Ranger utility vehicle and fled the property.
The South African Police Service pursued the suspect as he drove toward a nearby settlement known as Rainbow Valley. Olyn subsequently lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. He attempted to flee on foot before surrendering to the pursuing officers, who recovered the altered firearm.
The incident deeply impacted the local agricultural community. Legal proceedings concluded in May 2020 at the Northern Cape High Court sitting in Kimberley, where Judge Mpho Mamosebo found Willem Olyn guilty on eleven criminal counts—including murder, attempted murder, and vehicle theft—and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
