Grobler Jan
30 July 1999 · Farm Uitkyk, Ventersdorp · North West · Shot
Age 60. The perpetrators breached the house by removing a glass louvre window pane at the back of the residence. Once inside, they confronted Jan Grobler and fired a total of eight shots at close range using a stolen pistol and a revolver, wounding him severely. He was rushed to the Potchefstroom Hospital, where he fought for his life for two weeks before succumbing to multiple gunshot injuries on 25 July 1999. Because of the severity of the attack, neither Jan Grobler nor his elderly invalid mother were ever able to make official statements to the police before they passed away. However, during the violent struggle, Jan Grobler managed to shoot and wound one of the attackers in the leg. This injury led directly to the arrest of the primary suspect, Charles Montsitsi, who was 26 years old at the time. After fleeing the scene, Montsitsi sought assistance for his leg wound from an acquaintance named Johannes Lepora on a neighboring farm. Lepora immediately notified the authorities, allowing police to arrest Montsitsi and recover the murder weapon nearby. Forensic teams matched blood droplets found inside Jan Grobler's house directly to Montsitsi's DNA. Fingerprint evidence and a discarded cap left behind inside the home also led to the identification and arrest of his accomplice, Dolphas Mgiqwa, who was also 26 years old. Both individuals faced formal prosecution for the murder.
