✝
Botha Daniel Johannes Brink "Brink"
3 November 2008 · Mamogaleskraal, Brits · North West · Shot
Age 53. Before breaching the physical structures of the home, the large criminal gang systematically poisoned eight of the family’s Boerboel dogs, causing their loyal dog named Rinkhals to die out on the lawn and leaving two others heavily hospitalized.
With the guard dogs incapacitated, the intruders moved closer to the main house where Brink Botha, his thirty-nine-year-old wife, Christelle Botha, and their thirteen-year-old daughter, Odelia Botha, were asleep. The family was suddenly jolted awake by the final frantic barks of their animals. Looking through the bedroom window, they could see figures moving outside under the property’s exterior security lighting. Within moments, the attackers forcefully smashed through the large glass window of the bedroom to breach the home. Acting purely on protective instinct, Brink Botha charged forward to block the intruders from climbing inside and entering the room. During the violent struggle that immediately followed, the assailants opened fire at point-blank range, and Brink Botha was shot twice in the chest, collapsing into a pool of blood where he died almost instantly.
As her husband fell, Christelle Botha desperately fled the bedroom toward the study to retrieve a firearm from the household safe. However, one of the attackers intercepted her, grabbing her tightly around the neck while another forcefully dragged her young daughter out of her own bedroom. Holding the two terrified women at bay, the gang aggressively demanded cash in English. Christelle Botha showed them that there was no money kept inside the safe, prompting the men to discard the weapons stored within it and meticulously search through every drawer in the house. After tying up the mother and daughter, the attackers looted the home, taking only cellphones, a meager R200 in cash, and the keys to the family’s vehicle. The gang then loaded their stolen items into the family bakkie and sped away from the farm.
The subsequent criminal investigation became a significant matter for the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. A fingerprint expert successfully lifted a distinct thumbprint belonging to a Mozambican citizen named Thomas Chauke from a cookie jar resting on a table in the bloodied study next to the master bedroom. Though Chauke claimed he had previously performed painting work inside the house, the physical evidence alongside the recovery of a stolen cellphone from his co-accused, Zondi Nkuna of Soshanguve, sealed the prosecution's case. A third prominent suspect, Derick Mabasa, was shot dead by police after breaking free and attempting to flee from custody during the initial arrest operations. On Tuesday, 20 July 2010, Judge Peter Mabuse officially found Chauke and Nkuna guilty of murder, robbery, and animal cruelty. Rejecting arguments from the defense that their HIV-positive statuses should serve as mitigating factors, the court handed down life imprisonment sentences to ensure justice for the family.
