Jobling Charles Beresford Pretorius "Beres"

Age 56. He was a well-known local historian, chairman of the Hartbeespoort Environment and Heritage Association, and a descendant of the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius. Jobling was inside his home watching television on Friday night when he was ambushed and attacked by a group of pupils from the local Schaumberg school. The attackers had smoked dagga beforehand and targeted his home under the pretext of borrowing a car. During the robbery, one attacker grabbed Jobling by the neck and choked him, while another attacker used an electric cord to strangle him further. A third attacker struck him on the head with an iron bar, and he was also beaten across his legs with an iron pipe. The medical cause of death was determined to be a combination of being beaten with an iron bar and strangled or choked to death. After he was killed, the perpetrators searched him, stole his wallet, gold ring, cell phone, and his utility vehicle (bakkie). They loaded his body into the vehicle and dumped it in a nearby river. His body was subsequently discovered by authorities on Sunday, September 2, 2012.Law enforcement officials arrested the perpetrators following a motor vehicle accident. On the day after the murder, the group was driving Jobling's stolen vehicle when they crashed it on their way home. They were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, where the police successfully traced the vehicle registration back to Jobling and uncovered the crime. Three main suspects—identified as schoolboys named Ernest Mashudu Nevhulamba, Tshepang Mosito, and an individual named David—alongside two other pupils were implicated in the trial. Legal proceedings took place in the Pretoria High Court, where Ernest Mashudu Nevhulamba entered a plea explanation, took full responsibility, and was officially convicted of murder, housebreaking with intent to rob, and aggravated robbery. Tshepang Mosito also pleaded guilty during the trial.
