Janse van Rensburg Johan
25 October 2014 · Farm Droëkraal, Leeudoringstad · North West · Shot
Age 62. The tragic story of seventy-six-year-old Johan Janse van Rensburg unfolded on the afternoon of Saturday, October 25, 2014, near the rural town of Leeudoringstad in the North West Province. Johan was a well-known cattle farmer and a passionate champion for community safety, having played a monumental role in establishing and organizing the region's local farm watch patrol system.
The nightmare began at approximately two o'clock in the afternoon on his property, Droëkraal Farm. A gang of three armed criminals infiltrated the farm, first targeting a male and a female employee at their on-site residence. The intruders aggressively overwhelmed the two workers, binding them securely to prevent them from raising an alarm, and waited at the house. A short while later, Johan arrived at the workers' house, completely unaware of the ambush waiting for him. As he stepped up, the attackers confronted him and opened fire, shooting him dead on the spot. The criminals then dragged his body, placed it into the boot of his own utility vehicle, and sped away from the crime scene.
The bound workers managed to frantically wriggle themselves free from their restraints shortly after the killers left and immediately sounded the alarm to the surrounding agricultural security network. Local farmers and members of the community farm watch mobilized instantly, initiating a high-speed pursuit. About thirty kilometers away from Droëkraal, along the route leading toward Makwassie, the community members managed to corner the fleeing vehicle. A fierce gunfight erupted between the pursuing farmers and the criminals, resulting in two of the attackers being shot dead on the scene. The third suspect, a twenty-four-year-old named Joseph Hala, was wounded, taken into custody under police guard at a hospital, and subsequently stood trial in the Leeudoringstad Periodical Magistrate's Court on charges of murder, housebreaking, and kidnapping.
