Gouws Reuben

15 August 2015 · Farm Pinevale, Queenstown · Eastern Cape · Stabbed
Age 65. The violent ambush occurred at the homestead where the mother and son resided together. The perpetrators broke into the residence, completely overpowering both victims and inflicting extreme, fatal trauma. Reuben Gouws was tied up tightly with telephone wires and stabbed repeatedly, sustaining multiple knife wounds to his upper body before his body was left on his bedroom floor. His elderly mother, Hermien, was viciously strangled to death with her own scarf, and her body was later discovered hidden underneath a table inside the house.A highly effective localized community and worker response led to immediate arrests. Around 6:00 PM on the evening of the attack, a neighboring farmer was alerted by his workers attending a local soccer match about two kilometers away from Pinevale. A suspicious, bloodied man carrying a weapon had emerged from the veld and stumbled directly into the sports match. The farmworkers took decisive action, apprehending the bloodied suspect on the spot and immediately calling the South African Police Service. Following tactical interrogations and coordinated tracking by regional police units, a second accomplice was tracked down and arrested later that night at approximately 10:00 PM, while a third suspect was cornered and arrested the following Sunday morning at roughly 3:00 AM.
