Age 45. : At approximately 20:20, Brent Gibbons walked outside to turn off a water pump and was shot several times in the kitchen doorway by a lone perpetrator. Hearing the gunfire, his wife, Willemien Gibbons (43 years old), went to investigate. The intruder immediately shot her as well, wounding her severely. Despite her injuries, she managed to use the farm radio to alert a neighboring farmer. Brent Gibbons died at the scene. The couple's three young daughters (aged three, five, and eight) were inside the house during the attack but were not physically harmed. Police reports indicated that nothing was stolen, suggesting theft was not the motive. The local agricultural and business community raised a R100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
