Le Roux Julie
12 October 2009 · Kranshoek Smallholding, Plettenbergbaai · Western Cape · Shot
Age 50. Willem, who was a local builder originally from Kuruman, and his wife Julie were attacked in what was determined to be a brutally orchestrated robbery. A family friend last spoke to Willem on Saturday, October 10, 2009, which is when the home invasion is believed to have commenced. The attackers breached the property, overpowered the couple, and bound their hands tightly behind their backs. Both Willem and Julie were then executed by being shot directly through the forehead. The perpetrators ransacked the home and fled the smallholding in the couple's older model BMW. The crime came to light on Monday afternoon, October 12, 2009, after security personnel and police discovered the couple's vehicle abandoned at a local shopping center. The vehicle registration was traced back to their address, prompting Captain Malcolm Pojie and responding officers to conduct a welfare check at the Kranshoek smallholding, where they discovered the bodies of the couple just after noon.
Swift investigative work by the South African Police Service led to the arrest of three suspects in October 2009. The legal proceedings moved through the High Court system in stages. In May 2011, twenty-two-year-old Bongani Mateyise chose to plead guilty before Judge John Hlophe and was sentenced to life imprisonment for his direct role in the murders. His two co-accused, twenty-three-year-old Zoli Singaphi and twenty-four-year-old Luyanda Ngabon, maintained their innocence, sending their case to a full trial. On Friday, September 23, 2011, Judge Siraj Desai delivered the final judgment in the Knysna Circuit Court, finding both men guilty and sentencing Singaphi and Ngabon to double life terms of imprisonment for the murders, along with an additional fifteen years each for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
