Peffers Ronald Edmund

2 November 2012 · Kylemore Smallholding, Atlantis · Western Cape · Shot
Age 74. Seventy-four-year-old Ronald Edmund Peffers, a widely respected vintage car enthusiast and active member of South Africa’s oldest car club, the Wynberg-based Crankhandle Club, was alone at his homestead. His wife, Amanda Peffers, was away at the time, visiting one of their daughters in Hout Bay. Around 03:30, the peace of the smallholding was shattered when attackers broke into the house by forcing open and climbing through a window. Upon entering the residence, the intruders confronted Ronald Edmund Peffers in an apparent robbery attempt. During the ensuing confrontation, the attackers opened fire, shooting him in the shoulder. The criminals then fled the homestead, leaving the elderly man critically wounded. Despite his severe injuries, Ronald Edmund Peffers managed to communicate via his cellphone with his wife, who rushed to be near him. Emergency services evacuated him to the Wesfleur Hospital in Atlantis. His wife arrived at the medical facility and was able to speak with him briefly before he tragically succumbed to his wound and passed away later that morning. The death of Ronald Edmund Peffers deeply affected his family and the vintage car community, where he was well known for regularly contributing to his club's newsletter. He was survived by his wife and his two daughters, including his daughter Siobhan. Following the murder, Captain Frederick van Wyk of the South African Police Service confirmed that a house robbery and murder case had been opened, and police initial operations led to one suspect being detained for questioning. Despite early police intervention, the subsequent criminal investigation faced severe delays, extending for more than eighteen months without final resolution for the family.
