Heathfield Thomas "Tommie"

Early on that Sunday morning, the sixty-eight-year-old farmer Thomas Heathfield, widely known as Tom or Tommie, and his sixty-two-year-old wife Hendrika Maria Heathfield, known as Ria, were caught by surprise and overpowered at their homestead by an attacker. Later that morning, at around nine-thirty, a group consisting of forty-four-year-old Isabel Lamprecht, her eighteen-year-old son Christiaan, thirty-year-old Bobby Marchant, who is also recorded as Marchant Gerber or Martin Gerber in early news briefs, fifty-seven-year-old Bobby Reid, and his twenty-four-year-old son Andrew Reid arrived at the farm property to pick up the Heathfield couple. The perpetrators subsequently ambushed, assaulted, and shot the visitors, after which the victims were doused with petrol and set alight. Four individuals died as a direct result of the severe injuries and fatal trauma sustained during the violent attack. Hendrika Maria Heathfield died shortly after the onset of the attack, while Bobby Reid succumbed to his fatal wounds in the hospital. The other two fatalities recorded from the ambush were Andrew Reid and Bobby Marchant. Thomas Heathfield, Isabel Lamprecht, and Christiaan Lamprecht survived the initial onslaught, though Christiaan suffered extensive burns from being set on fire by the attackers. Following a dramatic car and helicopter pursuit that involved a tactical shootout with responding authorities, a nineteen-year-old farm worker was successfully arrested on Monday, August 10, 1998, in connection with the crimes. The apprehended suspect was a former employee who had lived and worked on the property before being dismissed by Thomas Heathfield one month prior to the incident.
