a 73-year-old farmer and well-known family genealogist originally from Austria, was brutally attacked in his home on De Hoek Plaas (Waboomsheuwel) located just outside Bonnievale in the Western Cape.The attack occurred during a home invasion where he was severely beaten by his assailants, suffering catastrophic traumatic brain injuries and a fractured skull. He was discovered the following morning, Wednesday, 3 September 2014, at approximately 07:55 when concerned neighbours contacted the police after being unable to reach him. Emergency teams rushed to the property, stabilised him, and he was airlifted to a specialized medical facility in Cape Town. Despite medical intervention, he remained in a deep coma for over a week and ultimately passed away from his severe injuries on 11 September 2014. However, due to the remote nature of the smallholding and a lack of immediate eyewitnesses, local authorities faced significant hurdles in tracking down the killers, leaving the community reeling from the sudden loss of a respected local figure.
