Fagan Mark
14 October 2017 · Philidephia Smallholdings, Atlantis · Western Cape · Shot
Age 46. Mark Fagan, fondly known as Farmer Mark to his community, was an avid animal lover who ran a unique mobile petting zoo for children's birthday parties across Cape Town.
The horror began while the family was hosting a fourteenth birthday slumber party for their daughter, Jamie, who had seven school friends staying overnight. Unbeknownst to the family, a gang of five men wearing balaclavas had been staking out the house for most of the day, even sneaking into the house earlier to steal liquor and children's sweets, which they consumed in the nearby bushes while they waited for the right moment to strike. Just past midnight, the armed intruders breached the braai room of the home, confronting the teenage girls, threatening them with weapons, demanding their cellphones, and tearing a necklace off one of the guests. Hearing the terrifying screams of the children, Mark Fagan and his wife, Joanne, came running into the room.
Driven by righteous anger and a desperate instinct to protect the children, Mark immediately engaged the attackers, using his bare fists to punch them off the girls and successfully shoving the intruders back up the passage toward the exit. While he was physically forcing the gang out of the house, Joanne rushed to the family safe to retrieve their firearm. During the chaotic retreat, the gang fired a shot directly at the teenage girls; Mark's fourteen-year-old daughter, Jamie, heroically threw herself on top of her friend to shield her, causing the bullet to narrowly miss them, though one girl sustained an injury to her leg from the assault. As the burglars were being driven out onto the porch, one of the men turned around and fired a fatal shot through Mark's heart before the entire gang fled the scene on foot into the darkness. Joanne ran outside to find her husband lying face down on the porch; his white shirt showed no blood or exit wound initially, but when she rolled him over, she discovered the catastrophic chest wound. Mark Fagan was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died shortly after from the injury, having successfully saved the lives of nine young girls and two women.
