Roos Michiel Willem Odendaal
31 October 1998 · Farm Coerland, Fouriesburg · Free State · Shot
Age 65. On Saturday, October 31, 1998, a horrific attack took place at the homestead of the farm Coerland, which is situated on the border with Lesotho in the district of Fouriesburg. The victims of this assault were sixty-five-year-old retired military officer Colonel Michiel Willem Odendaal Roos and his sixty-year-old wife, Anna Elizabeth Roos, affectionately known to their community as Annetjie. The tragedy unfolded when a notorious gang from Lesotho, led by the Tsoenyane brothers, executed a pre-planned raid on the property. The assailants successfully breached the security of the house, gained entry to the farmstead during the evening, and attacked the couple inside their home. Both Colonel Michiel Willem Odendaal Roos and Anna Elizabeth Roos were shot to death by the intruders before the gang fled back across the border.
