Age 65. The attack happened on 20 October 2012. The attackers gained entry to the property and confronted the elderly couple with shocking ferocity, using agricultural spades as weapons. Both Susan and Frans were severely beaten and hacked with the heavy implements, enduring devastating physical trauma. The primary motive for the extreme assault remains highly debated in regional security reports; the attackers did not ransack the farmhouse, nor did they attempt to steal the farm vehicles. The only items removed from the property were two firearms, personal cellphones, and a small amount of cash, leading commentators and rural safety advocates to highlight the sheer brutality directed at the couple. Emergency responders transported the critically injured couple to Bethlehem Hospital, where they were admitted in serious condition to receive intensive medical care. While her husband managed to survive the initial onslaught, Susan's body could not overcome the severe wounds inflicted upon her. A week after the attack, on Sunday, October 28, 2012, Susan succumbed to her injuries and passed away in the hospital.
