Age 59. Regarding what happened and how he died, Jochen Rädel went to the property at approximately 14:00 on Sunday, August 18, 2013, to inspect the progress of the building. While at the site, he was ambushed and violently assaulted with a blunt object, specifically identified as a pick. Later that day, after he could not be reached via telephone, his son Kai and his nephew Mark drove to the property and discovered him with severe injuries to his head and face. He was transported to the local Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic, where he was declared brain-dead. He passed away from his wounds the following morning, Monday, August 19, 2013, and his family subsequently made his organs available for donation. Two initial suspects, identified as Morné Martin, who was twenty years old at the time, and Ashwill Pietersen, were arrested and made appearances in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court shortly after the incident in August 2013. Continued police tracking led to a third arrest on March 28, 2014, when police took a twenty-seven-year-old man named Henrico Adams into custody in connection with the murder case.
