Jansen Van Rensburg Willem "Willie"
30 October 2014 · Farm Nuwejaarsbosch, Odendaalsrus · Free State · Shot
Age 72. On the evening of Thursday, 30 October 2014, 69-year-old dairy farmer Willem "Willie" Janse van Rensburg was attacked and fatally shot on his farm, Nuwejaarsbosch, near Odendaalsrus in the Free State. A gang of five armed men entered the property and confronted the family. During the violent home invasion, the attackers assaulted members of Van Rensburg's family, including his daughter-in-law and grandchildren who were visiting the farm at the time. The assailants forced open a safe, cutting it to steal an undisclosed amount of cash, a revolver, and the victim's bakkie. Willie Janse van Rensburg sustained severe gunshot wounds during the robbery and died en route to the hospital. His stolen vehicle was later discovered abandoned near the Thabong township.
Swift investigative work by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and local police led to the initial arrest of a suspect named Pule Motsamai shortly after the crime occurred. Following further operational leads, the Hawks arrested an additional eight men, bringing the total number of suspects appearing in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court to nine individuals. During the legal proceedings, testimony revealed that some of the perpetrators were heavily intoxicated following the assault. The state successfully prosecuted the primary killers responsible for the attack, resulting in their formal convictions and sentencing in court during the 2015 judicial session.
