Steyn Petrus

29 September 2021 · Farm Holfontein, Heilbron · Free State · Beaten
Age 50. The fatal encounter occurred as he was walking from the main farmhouse to a nearby storage room. He was ambushed and overpowered by three attackers who viciously assaulted him, inflicting multiple severe head wounds using a sharp instrument. After killing the farmer, the perpetrators entered the house, cut open the family safe, and fled with two firearms and other unconfirmed items. The tragedy carried deep emotional weight for the family as they had lived in Heidelberg for seventeen years and were scheduled to permanently relocate to this dream farm just a few weeks later in October. The following morning, on Thursday, September 30, 2021, his wife, Annette Steyn, grew anxious when she was repeatedly unable to contact him by phone. She contacted a farm worker on-site and instructed him to search the grounds, leading to the grim discovery of the body inside the storeroom. Free State Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele initially reported that responding officers tracked the footprints of three suspects away from the house, but rain overnight had washed away the tracks. On Wednesday, December 29, 2021, following actionable intelligence provided by local community members, the South African Police Service arrested four suspects. The arrested individuals included a forty-eight-year-old female and a fifty-one-year-old male who were employed as resident farmworkers living right on the Holfontein farm. The other two suspects were a twenty-seven-year-old male and a thirty-three-year-old male from the nearby town of Frankfort.
