Van Reeuwyk Johannes "Joop"

Age 87. The home invasion took place on Monday evening, 8 August 2022, at approximately 23:00. Attackers gained entry to the residence by smashing a living room window while Joop and his eighty-five-year-old wife, Carla van Reeuwyk, were asleep in their bedroom. The perpetrators ambushed and overpowered the elderly couple in their bed. During the violent onslaught, the suspects brutally assaulted both victims over the head with iron bars and left the house covered in blood. Evidence from the scene also indicated that Joop had been tightly strangled with a cord. Despite his severe injuries, Joop managed to shout a neighbor's name over their farm radio network during the intrusion. When the neighbor received no subsequent response, community members rushed to the property to give aid.Both victims were transported in critical condition to the trauma intensive care unit at Milpark Hospital, suffering from severe skull fractures and deep brain injuries. Carla van Reeuwyk fell into a coma but eventually awoke to receive treatment in a high-care rehabilitation facility. Joop initially showed brief signs of health improvement but ultimately succumbed to the profound physical trauma of his skull fractures and brain injuries four days before his eighty-seventh birthday.The incident was investigated by the South African Police Service in the North West province, with police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh managing the initial briefs. The suspects fled the farm property after the assault.
