Age 71. Four teenage assailants ambushed the prominent farmer outside his home between 07:00 and 09:00 on a Sunday morning when he went out to open a gate to let his cattle graze. The attackers forced him back inside the main residence where they demanded cash and weapons, launching a brutal assault on both Bekker and his wife, Marlinda. After striking Bekker across the face and head with an iron bar, the perpetrators slit his throat on the kitchen floor, causing him to succumb to his injuries at the scene. They then turned on his wife, severely beating her and suffocating her with a plastic bag before locking her in a bathroom. The assailants thoroughly ransacked the home, stealing three firearms, an undisclosed amount of cash, and the couple’s Renault Kwid.Within two hours of the attack, the suspects lost control of the stolen vehicle and crashed it in Villiers in the Free State. Quick-acting police units responding to the crash site apprehended all four suspects, who were identified as eighteen-year-old Siyanda Gift Ziqubu, eighteen-year-old Kgahliso Motoung, and two underage juveniles. The suspects were subsequently charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at the Balfour Magistrate's Court.
