Stark Leslie

Age 34. On Monday, October 23, 2023, a selfless act of bravery led to a devastating tragedy on a smallholding in the coastal area of Umkomaas, situated along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal. The victim was thirty-two-year-old local smallholder farmer Lesley Stark, whose life was violently cut short while attempting to shield a community member from harm. The incident began earlier that Monday morning when a group of armed intruders breached a neighboring residence by forcing open the door. The attackers held the female homeowner at gunpoint, demanding cash and cellular phones, and struck her on the head with the butt of a firearm before ransacking the property and taking a computer, money, and phones. Hearing or sensing the commotion, Lesley Stark immediately rushed to his neighbor's aid to intervene. As the suspects fled the ransacked house, they ran directly into Stark. The criminals quickly overwhelmed him, brutally assaulting him with sticks and stabbing him multiple times, leaving him critically wounded. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Stark managed to summon the strength to escape his attackers and flee to another nearby property to seek help. The neighbors immediately loaded his heavily bleeding body into a vehicle and rushed him toward the nearest local medical clinic. Tragically, Lesley Stark succumbed to his extensive stab wounds and trauma shortly before arriving at the clinic.
