Smith Thomas Butler

19 October 1997 · Farm Leeuwfontein, Aliwal-North · Eastern Cape · Stabbed
Age 67. The nightmare began as a result of a deceptive ploy calculated by two local men. The perpetrators lay in wait at a remote turnoff along the national N6 highway leading toward the entrance of the Leeufontein property. When the sixty-six-year-old farmer approached the junction, the men feigned distress, falsely pretending that their vehicle had suffered a mechanical breakdown nearby and asking for emergency assistance. Acting entirely out of goodwill, Thomas Butler Smith stopped his vehicle and gave the men a lift directly onto his property to assist them. The moment they breached the farmstead boundaries, the men turned on him with extreme violence. They launched a savage assault, utilizing a sharp blade to stab Thomas Butler Smith multiple times. He was stabbed to death inside his farm environment during the subsequent aggravated robbery. The South African Police Service launched a thorough investigation into the brutal murder, successfully identifying and apprehending both perpetrators. The legal proceedings spanned several years across the regional justice system framework. One of the primary attackers, identified in court as Nelani, appeared before the Grahamstown High Court in 1998, where he was formally convicted of murder and aggravated robbery and sentenced to life imprisonment. His accomplice, identified as Thantsi, evaded final prosecution for over a decade before being brought to justice at the Aliwal North High Court in June 2010 before Judge A.J. Ndzondo. The High Court found that while Thantsi played a slightly smaller physical role than his partner during the immediate fatal struggle, he was fully complicit in the execution of the crime. Judge Ndzondo found him guilty of aggravated murder and robbery, handing down concurrent prison terms of fifteen and eight years respectively. Thomas Butler Smith was subsequently laid to rest by his family in the new municipal cemetery in Aliwal North.
