Flemming Cecilia Johanna
28 October 2024 · Caymen Road, Eikenhof, Johannesburg · Gauteng · Other
Fifty-two-year-old Hester Flemming and her eighty-two-year-old mother, Cecilia Johanna Flemming, were asleep inside their home when an armed group of criminal intruders targeted their farm. The attackers breached the property boundaries by cutting cleanly through the perimeter fencing and forcefully breaking open the house's heavy security gate. Once inside, the gang aggressively ransacked the entire residence, systematically collecting valuables before stealing two of the family’s motor vehicles.
Instead of leaving the scene after the robbery, the assailants forced both Hester Flemming and her elderly mother out of the house, kidnapping them and driving away into the night. When the crime was discovered on Saturday morning, a massive and desperate search operation was immediately launched across Gauteng. The collaborative effort brought together numerous units, including the South African Police Service, private investigator Mike Bolhuis from Specialised Security Services, the National Crime Assist, the local Community Policing Forum, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department, and an outpouring of concerned community members and friends. Social media platforms were rapidly flooded with missing persons flyers and photographs of the two women as search teams tracked every available lead over the weekend.
The exhaustive search concluded with a tragic discovery on Monday, October 28, 2024, when the bodies of Hester Flemming and Cecilia Johanna Flemming were located dumped inside an old, abandoned opencast mine shaft in the nearby De Deur area. The South African Police Service Search and Rescue team was called to the location to carefully recover their remains from the deep shaft. Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that specialized investigators quickly tracked a key suspect to a local informal settlement, where he was caught red-handed in possession of personal items explicitly stolen from the Flemming home. The captured suspect was formally charged with house robbery and remanded in custody after appearing before the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court, while detectives continued to actively question additional men to secure full murder and kidnapping convictions.
