Rachmann Ernest Hannes

26 October 2024 · Farm Watervalsbank, Leslie · Mpumalanga · Shot
Age 74. The seventy-four-year-old farmer was last seen alive at around five o'clock in the afternoon. Worry grew among his family members the following day, October 27, when they made several attempts to phone him to wish him a happy birthday but their calls repeatedly went unanswered. Upon visiting his residence, relatives discovered the front door unlocked, while his personal vehicle—a white Ford Ranger—his keys, and his cellular phone were all left behind inside the house with no initial signs of forced entry or a break-in. An extensive thirteen-day search was immediately launched across the region, involving the Leslie South African Police Service, K9 units, mounted units, drones, helicopters, the Pink Ladies organization, and local farming communities who combed through the vast agricultural terrain. The grueling search concluded on Friday, November 8, 2024, when local cattle herders alerted authorities to a foul odor emanating from a manhole along the N17 highway just outside Leslie. Police officers and emergency responders recovered the deceased body of Ernest Hannes Rachmann from inside the manhole. Alongside his remains, investigators discovered a handgun with five live rounds of ammunition and a spent bullet casing. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Captain Magonseni Nkosi designated the incident as a highly mysterious death, and an official post-mortem autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause and method of his passing as part of the ongoing investigation.
