Age 79. Van der Merwe, a retired aircraft mechanic, lived alone in a rondavel on the farm. The incident occurred when an unknown group breached his residence, seemingly after Van der Merwe went to investigate when his dogs began barking. During the violent home invasion, the attackers subjected the elderly man to a severe assault, stabbing him seven times in the back and inflicting a deep stab wound to his neck using steak knives stolen from the house kitchen. The perpetrators then covered his face with a piece of cloth and left him to bleed to death. His daughter-in-law, Amanda van der Merwe, made the devastating discovery when she found his deceased body inside the home.The attackers ransacked the property, packing meat, groceries, old cell phones, a private knife collection, and Van der Merwe's personal firearm with ammunition into a municipal wheelie bin. They subsequently loaded the stolen items into his daughter-in-law's car, ripped off the vehicle's license plates, and attempted to flee. However, they struggled to operate the automatic transmission, crashed the vehicle into a wall on the property, and abandoned it to flee on foot.The South African Police Service launched an immediate investigation led by provincial spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone. Following coordinated operational breakthroughs involving the local farming community, township informants from Letsopa, and dedicated tracking teams, three suspects, including one minor, were successfully arrested.
