Pieterse Theodorus Cornelius Hendrik "Theo"

10 October 1997 · Farm La Riviera, Bultfontein · Free State · Shot
Age 59. Pieterse was a respected entrepreneur in the local community who originally turned a jewelry-making hobby on his farm into a successful family enterprise in 1983, which later grew into a prominent storefront on Bultfontein’s main street managed alongside his sons. On the day of the incident, or shortly prior, three men visited the farm under the guise of looking for employment. Later, an attack took place during which Pieterse was fatally shot execution style. In the direct aftermath of the murder, local farmers in the highly conservative district mobilized a search and pursuit of the three suspects who had been seen inquiring about work at La Riviera. This vigilante pursuit or citizen's arrest culminated in a violent confrontation where one of the suspects died from injuries sustained during the capture, and the remaining two suspects were severely injured before being turned over to the authorities. The incident escalated regional tensions significantly and was cited by the Free State Agricultural Union at the time as a reflection of the deep-seated fear and frustration surrounding the dramatic rise of rural violence in late 1997, prompting calls for national interventions and leading to investigations ordered by President Nelson Mandela.
