The assailants broke into their residence on the smallholding and shot Frans dead before assaulting his wife and fleeing the crime scene.The North West South African Police Service launched an intensive investigation that led to a rapid breakthrough. Within days of the murder, police detectives tracked down and arrested a primary male suspect. A second suspect was successfully apprehended by the police on Sunday morning, January 29, 2012. Police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane confirmed that during the second arrest, the suspect was found in possession of three firearms, one of which ballistics tests indicated was the exact weapon used to kill Frans van der Linden.
