✝
de Villiers Rachel Elizabeth "Ralie"
16 October 2013 · Farm Broadlands · Eastern Cape · Stabbed
Age 87. The tragedy traces back to 2012, when a twenty-two-year-old Lesotho national named Thulani Mkhentane burglarized the Broadlands homestead while the family was away, stealing cash and a handgun. Mkhentane fled across the border to Lesotho, where he was subsequently jailed for an unrelated crime. Upon his release from the Lesotho prison, he crossed back into South Africa with a vendetta, returning to the Barkly East region where he covertly watched the De Villiers home from the surrounding mountains, tracking the family's movements. In the dead of night, the intruder forced open a small window of the sandstone farmhouse to gain silent entry into the residence. Once inside, he launched a savage ambush on the sleeping household, utilizing a sharp blade to inflict catastrophic cuts and deep stab wounds on the elderly couple, ultimately slitting their throats in their own home. The couple's fifty-three-year-old son, Dawie de Villiers, who lived with his parents, heard the commotion and bravely attempted to intervene. He was repeatedly stabbed and slashed all over his body, but he managed to survive the initial onslaught despite being left for dead.
The gruesome scene was discovered around three o'clock in the morning by the couple's daughter, Dr. Christina de Villiers, who, along with her husband, Dr. Johan Olivier, worked as medical doctors in the Barkly East community. Relying on her medical training through the immense trauma, Christina immediately administered emergency first aid to her critically wounded brother, stabilizing him at the scene before rushing him to the local Cloete-Joubert Hospital. Dawie was subsequently airlifted via an emergency medical helicopter to the Mediclinic Bloemfontein in the Free State, where he spent weeks heavily sedated, placed on a ventilator, and fighting a severe bout of pneumonia before making a miraculous physical recovery.
The South African Police Service, led regionally by spokesperson Captain Ursula Roelofse, initiated a massive tracking operation that swiftly led to the arrest of Thulani Mkhentane, who appeared in the Barkly East periodical court shortly after the double murder.
