Dobani Makoarela "Makwarela"

14 October 1991 · Farm Clouds End, Louis Trichardt · Limpopo · Other
On the evening of Monday, October 14, 1991, a politically motivated triple murder shook the Clouds-End area just outside Louis Trichardt, now known as Makhado, in the far northern region of what was then the Transvaal province. The attack claimed the lives of fifty-year-old Wilson Dobani, also known by his traditional name Wilson Madiburu, his wife Makoarela "Makwarela" Dobani, who worked as a domestic worker at the property, and their employer, forty-six-year-old Maria Claudine Roux. The attack was orchestrated by a radical right-wing cell known as the National Socialist Partisans. Driven by fears of a communist political takeover in South Africa, the group sought to establish a white volkstaat through violent means and launched the operation specifically to steal high-caliber firearms and ammunition from the smallholding property. Equipped with firearms, twenty-year-old Cornelius van Wyk and his accomplice Jurgen Matthew White ambushed the property. Wilson Dobani and his wife Makoarela were confronted by the cell members during the weapons heist. The attackers shot both of them and subsequently used a sharp object to cut their throats to ensure they were dead. After executing the couple, the attackers forced their way into the main house, where Maria Roux was hiding inside a cupboard while praying. Van Wyk fired multiple rounds directly through the wooden cupboard door, killing her instantly. The cell then ransacked the property, seizing an automatic rifle and other weapons before fleeing. The South African Police Service launched an intensive cross-provincial investigation to track the cell members. A few weeks after the triple murder, in November 1991, accomplice Jurgen White and fellow cell member Jurgens Grobbelaar were cornered by police forces near Noenieput in the Kalahari region, where both died following a violent shootout. Cornelius van Wyk and the cell's political leader, Jean Prieur du Plessis, were successfully apprehended and brought to trial.
