the attack was executed by a casual farm laborer who had a deteriorating working relationship with Weightman over alleged disputes regarding food and pay. The perpetrator crept into the room where Weightman was sleeping and launched a sudden ambush. Weightman was struck several times with a bush knife (machete) across his head, neck, and hands, dying in his bed from the severe sharp-force trauma. Following the killing, the attacker ransacked the room, stealing Weightman's cellphone, a table knife, packages of peanuts, a DStv decoder, and various tools before fleeing the scene.Law enforcement authorities from the specialized Pietermaritzburg Organised Crime Unit and local rural safety teams launched an immediate investigation and arrested the perpetrator shortly after the murder. The suspect was identified as Mfanyana Khanyile, a 65-year-old habitual criminal who had a notorious track record of escaping from prison on eight previous occasions throughout his life.The legal proceedings culminated in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. During the trial, Mfanyana Khanyile chose to enter a formal plea of guilty and provided a full confession detailing his motives and how he carried out the attack. On Friday, September 16, 2005, the Pietermaritzburg High Court officially convicted him and sentenced Mfanyana Khanyile to life imprisonment for the murder of Trevor Weightman.
