Johan van Rensburg was a 77-year-old game farmer who was murdered in the early morning hours of 20 June 2012 on his property, the Cosmopolite game farm, located approximately 11 kilometers outside Baltimore in the Tolwe area near Lephalale, Limpopo province.Four attackers gained entry into the homestead around 04:00 AM by cutting through an electric fence and bending back the exterior burglar bars of a bathroom window. The perpetrators moved to the main bedroom where they ambushed the sleeping couple. Johan van Rensburg was shot dead directly in his bed, sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to his body. His 65-year-old wife, Gloudien van Rensburg, who was lying next to him, was shot three times in the chest and upper body, sustaining critical injuries that left her at risk of permanent paralysis.Four American hunting tourists staying in guest quarters on the farm were awakened by the gunfire and raised the alarm, spotting four men fleeing out of the bathroom window. A professional hunter residing on the property ran to the main house to assist, while the couple's son, Hanno, who farmed on a neighboring property, arrived shortly after to find his father's body and his wounded mother. Gloudien van Rensburg died on the night of Thursday, 5 July 2012, at the Limpopo Mediclinic in Polokwane.She survived for just over two weeks following the initial June 20 attack but was left paralyzed from the neck down due to the three gunshot wounds she sustained. Her condition deteriorated severely after she suffered a stroke earlier that week, prompting doctors to summon her children to the hospital shortly before she passed away.
