20 April 2022 · Farm Levubu, Louis Trichardt · Limpopo · Burnt
On the afternoon of April 20, 2022, young attackers accosted the elderly couple inside their home, which they then completely ransacked. The criminals gathered several items, including the family's firearms, and loaded them into the couple's bakkie. Before trying to escape, the perpetrators tightly bound the couple and set the farmhouse on fire, leaving them inside to burn beyond recognition.A member of the local farm watch noticed the rising smoke and rushed to investigate. Upon arrival, he spotted the suspects trying to flee the scene in the stolen bakkie, prompting them to abandon the vehicle along with the stolen firearms and flee on foot into the surrounding area. Local farmers and neighbors who arrived to extinguish the flames discovered the bound and deceased couple inside the gutted remains of the house. Following a swift 72-hour activation plan by the Limpopo police, teenagers Mukhethwa Goodman Magoma and Engetelo Advance Sambo were tracked down and arrested at their homestead in Hasani village near Malamulele the very next day. The exact trial verdicts and sentences for Mukhethwa Goodman Magoma and Engetelo Advance Sambo have not been widely publicized in national media since their initial court proceedings. During their last tracked appearances at the Vuwani Magistrate's Court, they were formally charged with housebreaking, robbery with aggravating circumstances, arson, and two counts of murder. They were denied bail and remanded in custody due to heavy opposition from the state and the local farming community. Because both suspects were teenagers at the time, the court placed strict restrictions on the media regarding the reporting of specific trial details and subsequent sentencing schedules.
