Barnard Johan

26 March 2026 · Kameeldrift East, Pretoria · Gauteng · Shot
Age 61. Barnard, who had lived in the Kameeldrift area for 18 years and was retired there, was targeted between 06:00 and 08:00 in the morning when he went to investigate suspicious activity on his property. The attackers had attempted to break open the security bars in front of a window to gain entry to the residence. During an obvious physical struggle, Barnard sustained bruising to his face and was shot at close range in the stomach, while a second bullet struck a wall behind him. His body was only discovered at approximately 16:30 in the afternoon by a long-time neighbor and friend who grew concerned after noticing the house door standing wide open and receiving no contact from Barnard all day. The neighbor found Barnard lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The attackers stole his firearm, cell phone, a brush cutter, and two laptops. One of the laptops was later recovered by the police after being discarded in the bushes near the house. Barnard is survived by his three children, including his son Rohan, as well as stepchildren and grandchildren.
